Gentry Locke Recognized in W&L Law Alumni Magazine

In announcing the official launch of its new Third Year Curriculum in Fall 2009, Washington & Lee University's W&L Law Alumni Magazine recognized Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore for piloting a semester-long externship program for Washington & Lee Law School students.

Managing Partner Mike Pace created the externship based on a 24-page curriculum adopted by the W&L Law faculty in the Fall of 2007. Beginning in January, 2008, Gentry Locke has hosted a group of third year law students each semester. The student externs are introduced to the real-world problem-solving challenges faced by clients and their attorneys, and are taught that the practice of law is a profession which involves much more than doing legal work for clients. The law students are supervised by lawyers at Gentry Locke who serve as their mentors. These externs participate in client meetings with partners and associates, sit in on conference calls between lawyers, engage in strategy sessions, research cases, write briefs, and attend court sessions. They also attend zoning hearings, meet with government officials, other lawyers and judges, attend bar association luncheons, participate in depositions and mediation sessions, and engage in civic, cultural and charitable activities.
