The Roanoke-based law firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore will present a Faith & Law Seminar on October 6, 2009 at The Sheraton Roanoke Hotel & Conference Center. The seminar will address issues faced by faith-based non-profit organizations and will feature Gentry Locke attorneys as well as outside speakers.

"Religious organizations and houses of worship encounter many of the same legal issues that confront businesses," says attorney Matthew Broughton, Group Chair for Gentry Locke's Religious Organizations law group. "But they do so in the unique context of their missions and their established traditions," he explains. "As religious organizations grow and change, so do their legal needs," he adds.

Topics of the seminar, which were determined after the law group sought input via meetings with religious leaders from the Roanoke Valley and around Virginia, will include:

  • Employment and compensation matters
  • Legal liability, charitable immunity and insurance coverage issues
  • Construction, maintenance and improvement of buildings
  • Tax and financial issues
  • Corporate governance, real estate and financing issues
  • Crisis management and public relations

Broughton came up with the idea for the seminar when he noticed more and more of the firm's clients were houses of worship or religiously-oriented businesses struggling with a variety of issues. The seminar is designed to provide religious leaders, board members, and directors with information they need to more effectively navigate an increasingly complex legal and ethical landscape. Access Public Relations will partner with Gentry Locke in offering advice on the public perception of situations, and how the media reacts differently than the courts.

Leaders of churches, synagogues, mosques, congregations, and faith-based organizations such as religious schools and institutions, faith-based senior living facilities, religious media entities, and non-profit religious service agencies are encouraged to attend.
