Much to the surprise of many of his colleagues at Gentry Locke, the Roanoke Times Southwest County Neighborhood publication SWoCO featured an article about a special project of attorney Matt Broughton.
Since 2007, Broughton had been making hope chests as heirloom gifts for his daughters, aged 16 and 19.
According to the article, "Matt and his friends researched their idea and found an 18th-century French chest that they used as a guide. The chests have no screws or nails in them, are completely book matched and are complete with old skeleton keys. All the hardware used on the chest was ordered from England including the hinges. Every piece is hand-milled, including the molding. Inside each chest, Matt wrote each of his daughters a message."
Due to his busy workload at the Firm, work on the chests had to be done on nights and weekends. While it was more work than he had anticipated, it was apparently well worth it.
According to Broughton, "I'm very proud of it. My girls are so top-notch. They were a good incentive to do it the best I could."
